But what's in the Kaaba? It is true that this question can cross the mind of a Muslim, but very few know the answer. We will try to answer it in this article.
What's in the Kaaba? A well-kept secret
Located at the centre of the sacred Al Haram mosque, the Kaaba plays a vital role for believers. It is the qibla for the 5 daily prayers.
It is also one of the emblematic places where pilgrims gather during the hadj. More specifically, during the tawaf that takes place around it. Despite this exclusive place, few people have had the privilege of entering inside the Sacred House.
Nevertheless, a few rare photos and videos allow us to detail what's inside. First of all, it has to be said that the interior of the Sacred House has been maintained by various rulers throughout history.
Plaques commemorating the renovation work of each of them line the walls. In addition, we know that it is made up of a single piece with 3 supporting pillars.
The walls and floors are covered in marble. And it would appear that numerous gold and silver lamps hang from the ceiling.
There would also be a white marble cupboard inside. Not least to store the oils and perfumes used to clean it.
Among other features, there is an internal door covered in gold and silver called "the door of repentance". This door opens onto a staircase leading to the roof.
What's in the Kaaba? Back to the past
To begin with, Allah says: "And when We indicated for Ibrahim the place of the House (saying to him) do not associate anything with Me...". (Sura Al Hajj verse 26).
And He said: "And when Ibrahim and Ismâ'îl were building the foundations of the House. O our Lord, accept this from us! For Thou art the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing" (verse 127 of Al Baqara).
Moreover, we learn in verses 96-97 of Sura Al Baqara the purpose of this construction. In other words, Allah says: "The first House that has been built for people is the blessed Bakka. And a good direction for the universe".
Before the advent of Islam, the Kaaba contained idols worshipped by the Quraich (inhabitants of Mecca). In particular, their main idol Hubal, which stood in the centre of the Kaaba.
That's why people came here to leave their offerings and gifts.
Finally, during the conquest of Mecca, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that all idols be destroyed in the Kaaba. But also all those around her.
An honour reserved for an elite
In other words, until now, being able to enter in the Sacred Houses is reserved for a privileged few. King Salman of Saudi Arabia had this honour at the end of May 2023.
Accompanied by Sheikh As-Sudais and several other people, he prayed inside the Kaaba itself. He then took part in cleaning the Kaaba.
