Overview of Ihram attire

Would you like to find out more about the Hajj and Umrahand the rituals that revolve around it? First of all, do you know what the legal dress for the muslim man who wants to make the pilgrimage? If the answer is no, or if you have any doubts, here is a short guide to help you make the right choice. An overview of Ihram attire.

Presentation of the Ihram outfit

First of all, the term "ihram" comes from the verb "harama". Which means "to deprive, to forbid". So why use this term to designate a Hajj outfit ? Because before entering the sacred perimeter of Meccathe pilgrim must be in a state of purity. It is also at this point that he puts on his Ihram outfit. In this way, he prohibits himself from doing a number of things specific to this state.

La legal clothing for men during the hajj consists of 2 rooms:

Le Izar (in Arabic)also known as the loinclothThis is used to cover the lower part of the body. It is wrapped around the stomach, above the navel, to hide the 'awra (the part of the body that absolutely must be covered), and falls to below the knees.

Le Rida is the piece that covers the upper body. It is tied around the chest, leaving only the right shoulder and right arm visible during the tawaf.

Generally, this Islamic garment is essentially made from cotton. The advantages of this fabric are its resistance to washing, its softness and its comfort for the skin. It is also a fabric that is neither too hot nor too cold.

The conditions and sounnan surrounding the holding of Ihram...

  • This Muslim clothing must not be sewn or shaped around any part of the body.
  • It must be a plain white colour, just like the white thobe present in the United Kingdom
  • Nor should a man wear a sewn garment, called al makhit, which shows the shape of the body before putting on the izar and rida
  • This sacred outfit must obviously be clean, but not perfumed.
  • Do not wear shoes that extend beyond the ankles
  • It is forbidden to cover the head

Here are a few hadiths from our beloved Prophet on the subject of ihram dress:

The Prophet (alayhi salat wa salam) said: "And don't wear clothes that make you feel guilty.'clothes that have been touched by Saffron nor Wars [which is a plant that gives off a good smell]". Authenticated by Al Boukhari and Mouslim].

As the'said the Prophet (alayhi salat wa salam): "And that the'a'between you enters in a state of sacredness in an izar and a rida as well as shoes. And s'he can't find any shoes, even though'he takes slippers but that'he cuts them so that'they do not extend beyond the ankles". [Reported by Ahmad].

In the hadith of'Ibn 'Omar, who'Allah be pleased with him, a man said: "O Messenger of Allah!'Allah, which the'He said: "He must not wear shirts, turbans, trousers or capes that cover his head as well. He said: "He must not wear shirts, turbans, trousers or capes that also cover the head". [Authenticated by Al Boukhari and Mouslim].

And what about the clothing worn by Muslim women?

For the pilgrimage, there is no mention of specific Islamic clothing for women. Of course, women must wear the legal veil and in fact respect the conditions.

It is also advisable to wear clothes that the woman feels comfortable in. Alternatively, she can wear an abaya or jilbab of her choice.

And you, have you chosen your ihram outfit for your pilgrimage to Mecca ?
