Where does the name quraysh come from?
There are different sources regarding the etymology of the word Quraysh. According to one theory, its name has the diminutive form of qirsh, which means shark.
The 9th century genealogist, Hisham ibn al-Kalbi, asserted that there was no eponymous founder of the name of this tribe. In this case, the name would come from taqarrushwhich means "a gathering" or "association" in Arabic.

The ancestor of Quraysh is Fihr ibn Malik. His complete genealogy is as follows Fihr ibn Malik ibn al-Nadr ibn Kinana ibn Khuzayma ibn Mudrika ibn Ilyas ibn Mudar ibn Nizar ibn Ma'd ibn Adnan. The latter belonged to the Kinana, and his descent is attributed to Adnan, the father of the "North Arabs".
What's more, this ancestor led the Kinana and Khuzayma warriors to the defence of the Kaaba. At the time, the Kaaba was a major pagan sanctuary in Mecca.
The establishment of the quraysh in Mecca...
Qusayy unified the descendants of Fihr and established the Quraysh as the dominant power in Mecca. Indeed, after conquering Mecca, he assigned quarters to different Quraysh clans.
Those around the Kaaba were known as the Quraysh al-bi alah. And the clans settled on the outskirts of the sanctuary were called the Quraich al-zawahiri.
The Qurayshites' conflict with the prophet Mohammed...
The qurayshites were polytheists and opposed the monotheistic message of the Prophet (Sallalahu wa alayhi wa salam), Himself qurayshi of the Banu Hashim. The tribe used every means possible to harm Mohamed (Sallalahu wa alayhi wa salam) and harassed the members of the nascent Muslim community.
Mohamed could still benefit from the protection of his uncle Abu Talib. However, to escape these harnesses, the Prophet, accompanied by Abu Bakr, emigrated. He then confronted a Quraysh caravan returning from Palestine, and also defeated them at the Battle of Badr in 624.
Later, the Qurayshites besieged the Muslims in Medina in 627, but were defeated in the Battle of the Ditch. A treaty was signed between the Muslims and the Qurayshites in 628. However, this was violated due to a dispute between Bedouin tribes. Finally, in 630, the Muslims decided to settle the conflict with the Quraysh by liberating Mecca.
Thanks to this victory, the Muslims took advantage of this to spread Islam. This prompted many Qurayshites to embrace Islam.Islam.
