Hajar in Islam

Lhe story of Hajar in the Koran marked the centuries that followed, and those that will follow in chaa Allah. To find out more, let's discover an extraordinary story. Let's take a look together...

Hajar in Islam: discover her story in the Koran

Le prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salam) married Sarah, hoping to have children. However, as time went by, he realised that Sarah could not have children. So Sarah, saddened to see her husband grow old without children, proposed to him Hajar as his second wife. Hajar and Ibrahim then gave birth to a baby boy: Ismail.

Afterwards, Allah be praised asked the prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salam) to prepare his wife Hajar and baby Ismail for a long journey. The family crossed the desert, then Ibrahim was forced to leave them in the shelter of a tree with a bag of dates and some water. Then he left.

Once the Hajar and Ismail consumed, the woman and her son became extremely dehydrated. In despair, the mother began to run up the hills of Marwa and Safa seven times, imploring her Lord. Then she finally ran out of energy.

It was at this moment that she heard a voice, that of the angel Gabriel (Jibril) who appeared and struck the sand with his wing. Water gushed out and Hajar drank and filled her gourd with water. This spring was called Zamzam. Since that day, Muslims on their way to Mecca have been drinking this sacred water.

As a result, Hajar had a source of water to exchange with the travellers she came across. Eventually, more and more people were attracted by the water and set up camp nearby. And so the arid desert was transformed into a bustling village.

The benefits of Hajar's story for Islam...

La life of Hajar, the wife of the prophet Ibrahim (alayhi salam) is an example for Muslims. Indeed, believers can identify with this great woman who left her mark on Islam. In particular, through her behaviour in the face of hardship.

Ibrahim's wife distinguished herself by her tawakkul (trust in Allah). Indeed, her life is an illustration of this trust. She is the symbol of a believer who understands what our Lord expects of his servants.

Indeed, Muslims need to show their ability to endure, their perseverance and therefore their full trust in Allah.

Hajar's story is therefore an example and a model for every believer in Islam.

The story behind Safa and Marwa...

Le rite of Safa and Marwa commemorates the actions of the wife of Ibrahim (alayhi salam), Hajar. As we have just seen, Hajar walked seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water for her son Ismail.

By performing this rite, Muslims are reminded of this event and of the mercy of their Lord when they implore Him.

Allah says in the Holy Koran :

AS-Safâ and Al-Marwah are truly among the sacred places of Allah. Therefore, whoever makes pilgrimage to the House or performs Umra does not commit a sin by going back and forth between these two mounts. And whoever does a good deed of his own free will, then Allah is Grateful, All-Knowing. [Surah al-Baqarah, 2: 158]
