Mount Ouhoud in Medina: presentation of a historic site
The mountain of Ouhoud in Medina is around 7 km long. Its highest point is 1077 metres, and it is 4km from the Masjid Nabawi prophetic mosque. This is the the most important Islamic site in the holy city of Medina.
One of the special features of Mount Ouhoud is the fact that it is composed of volcanic rock. The mountains are home to a wealth of flora. For example, date palms, jujube trees, acacias, carob trees and vines.
Mount Ouhoud also has a number of caves that store rainwater. As well as the grotto d'Ouhoudwhich is said to have been used to protect the Prophet (peace be upon him) during the famous battle.
The battle of Ouhoud
The mount Ouhoud in Medina was made famous by the great battle that took place in year 3 of the Hegira. It pitted our Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Muslims against the Meccan Quraysh. The latter were eager for revenge and blinded by their hatred of Islam. In the end, it was the Muslims who lost that day.
In addition, the battle that took place on Mount Ouhoud in Medina was marked by very specific events:
- The archers who were under the orders of the Prophet (peace be upon him) left their posts;
- The martyrdom of the Prophet's uncleHamza Ibn Abd Al Moutalib (may Allah be pleased with him);
- During this battle, Muhammad (peace be upon him) broke his tooth;
- The (false) rumour spread by the Shaytan that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had died in battle. This caused some Muslim fighters to flee;
- There were also 70 martyrs on the Muslim side, who died fighting in the path of Allah;
- Allah has revealed 60 verses in the Koran about the battle that took place that day on Mount Ouhoud in Medina.
