Discover the history of the Quba mosque

La Quba mosque is located on the outskirts of Medina. It is one of the oldest mosques in the world. It was built in the 7th century. This masjid is considered one of the holiest sites for Muslims the world over.

The importance of the Quba mosque in Islam...

This mosque occupies a very important place in Islamic history. It is also mentioned in the Holy Koran as a mosque built on "piety".

It is also the place where the Prophet (Sallalahu wa alayhi wa salam) and his companion Abu Bakr stayed for the first time after emigrating to Medina. Similarly, the first stones were laid by the Prophet (Sallalahu wa alayhi wa salam) as soon as he arrived during his emigration.

This holy place is present in the Koran and the hadiths

As we have said, this masjid is mentioned in the Quran. In Sura 8, verse 108, Allah tells us:

"...For a Mosque founded from the first day, on piety, is more worthy than you standing there [to pray]. There are people there who like to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves."

It is also mentioned in several hadiths.

According to Abdallah Ibn 'Omar: The Prophet (Sallalahu wa alayhi wa salam) used to go to the mosque of Quba every week (*) either on foot or on horseback.

Nafi' said: Abdallah Ibn Omar also did this.

(Reported by Bukhari in his Sahih n°1193 and Mouslim in his Sahih n°1399)

Moreover, there is also a hadith which tells us that whoever purifies himself at home, goes to the masjid Quba and makes two rakats, he will be rewarded with the reward of an Umrah (small pilgrimage). (Sunan ibn Majah)

This shows us its importance.

The architecture of the Quba mosque

Since the construction of the Quba mosque, It has undergone numerous renovations under the many caliphs. But also by the Saudi government. It is made from white marble and its alabaster structure is both contemporary and simple. It features six domes and four minarets.

There is a large prayer hall surrounding a central courtyard of black, white and red marble. The courtyard has several entrances, including the northern part, which is reserved for women's prayers. This masjid can accommodate more than 20,000 worshippers at a time.

La Quba mosque is just a ten-minute drive from the town centre. An Nabawi mosque. However, there is now a specially-designed pedestrian walkway between the masjid Nabawi and the masjid Quba. It takes around 40 to 45 minutes on foot. The starting point is on the side of the new Quba walkway.

So, if you're passing through Médine, don't hesitate to visit the Quba mosque!
